‘A detective story of the heart, written with wit and compassion,\nabout the mystery called love and marriage’ – Evan<\/b> Rhodes<\/b>.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>

Initially, the reader feels compassion for Shelley, the prototype of\nthe abandoned woman, the classic case of one who devoted herself to the rearing\nof children and the <\/i>pleasuring of\nhusband. But that sympathy quickly turns to admiration, respect, a liking for\nanother human being. And a surprising fact is that the <\/i>male, Indian born author could so effortlessly delve into the\npsyche of a woman from such a different culture. <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>

\n\n\n\n<\/p>

The title may\nput readers off until, well into the book. Shelley, recalling her honeymoon in Paris<\/st1:city><\/st1:place>, states, “<\/i>We <\/i>had spent the occasional night together before, but then we were\nlovers and lovers are not people. It\u2019s easy to lose a husband, getting one back is another story.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

-Murari\u2019s smoothly paced, straightforward style involves you quickly\nin the characters who come alive on the pages. There is a good deal of subtle\nhumour too which, coupled with the sleuthing and subterfuge makes the novel an\nenjoyable book. If this was\ntypical late- \u201870s women\u2019s novel, Shelley Warwick would give her wandering\nhusband his divorce, go to consciousness-raising classes, start a new career,\nhave some affairs and find herself and maybe even a new man. <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>

But there are\ndozens of those novels now, so Timeri Murari has wisely changed the story line.\nShelley Warwick, still attractive at 38, still in love, is the proud daughter\nof a British general, and she sets out to conquer her David back. . <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>

David has\nvanished, but some clever sleuthing thing puts her on the trail of him and his\nnew love, a not-so-sweet young thing named Candy. The story is clever and the\nscenes are often amusing. <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>

It soon becomes clear that if David isn’t smart enough to choose his\nplucky wife over Candy, he doesn’t deserve her anyway. Murari has created a\nfine, very real portrait of a woman in Shelley, and he avoids the stereotypes\nthat could easily sink this kind of novel. Shelley’s parents, for example,\nalthough they never liked David, don’t say “I told you so” when they\nhear he is gone. Her mother hugs her; her father provides the military strategy\nfor the war against Candy.
